SESSION 3

Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Construction

Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is one of the techniques that could be used to reduce CO2 emissions caused by human activities.

What will we talk about in this session?

Sustainable construction seeks to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, contributing to the fight against climate change and creating healthy and efficient spaces. This practice promotes the use of low-impact materials and green technologies, generating jobs in sustainable sectors and demonstrating the environmental commitment of companies.

In addition to providing comfort and safety, sustainable construction reduces the impact on the environment throughout the life of the building, from construction to demolition. It focuses on the use of local materials, energy efficiency, water and waste management, and the use of renewable resources.

Certifications such as LEED and BREEAM assess the sustainability of buildings, considering factors such as the environment, resource management, air quality, energy efficiency and the well-being of users, promoting a holistic approach to responsible construction.

These differences mean that the risks derived from climate change are different. The impacts of recent climate-related extreme events, such as heat waves, droughts, floods, cyclones, and forest fires, highlight the significant vulnerability and exposure of some ecosystems and many human systems to current climate variability.
