SESSION 4

Hydrogen and its Applications in Industry

Interconnections are the most significant instantaneous backup to security of supply.

What will be discussed in this session?

Hydrogen is a versatile resource with key applications in industry since the early 20th century, when it was mainly used in fertiliser production. Today, with the growing demand for clean energy, its use has spread to sectors such as power, metallurgy and sustainable fuel production.

The advantages of hydrogen include:

  • Reduced emissions: Its use reduces industrial emissions of polluting gases.
  • Energy efficiency: Hydrogen fuel cells enable highly efficient energy conversion.
  • Flexibility and versatility: It can be generated from multiple sources, such as water and biomass, providing flexibility in its production.
  • Energy security: Local hydrogen production reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The future of hydrogen is bright, with advances such as high-efficiency electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, innovations in storage and new applications in sectors such as aviation and maritime transport, which could revolutionize these industries.
