Román Orús is an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) in San Sebastián, as well as the co‑founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Multiverse Computing, the world’s leading company in quantum computing software and quantum artificial intelligence. After obtaining his bachelor’s and PhD in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 2006 (the first PhD in Spain on quantum algorithms), he worked as a researcher at the University of Queensland (Australia) and at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (Germany), and also served as a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany). He has also been a visiting professor at Université Paul Sabatier – CNRS (France) and at DIPC.
Román Orús has received several distinctions for his work, including a Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowship, the 2014 Early Career Prize of the European Physical Society, and the 2024 Physics, Innovation and Technology Award from the Royal Spanish Society of Physics. He is the author of numerous articles on quantum physics and artificial intelligence, which have received a large number of citations and include fundamental contributions in the fields of complex quantum systems, applied quantum computing, and quantum artificial intelligence.
He has also contributed to numerous patent applications in quantum AI technologies. He is a member of the United Nations’ Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, a mentor to start‑ups at the Creative Destruction Lab, a board member of Innobasque, a steering committee member of the scientific journal Quantum, a member of the “Quantum for Quants” (Q4Q) committee of the Quantum World Association, a partner at Entanglement Partners, a member of the Scientific Committee of the Benasque Pedro Pascual Science Center, and former president of the Quantum Information Specialized Group of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics.
